Spell to Write and Read
The WISE Guide
70 Basic Phonogram Cards

Spelling Rule Cards
Phonogram CD

Spell to Write and Read is both the name of the master book to the entire program and the title for the program itself. The SWR Core kit contains five companion products that work together to teach the first 4 to 6 years of unified language arts or to remediate any age.

Spell to Write and Read is an Old Schoolhouse winner for educational excellence (see full review here). It is also named as one of Cathy Duffy's Top Picks. In 2012 SWR was voted 1st by homeschoolers for their favorite programs in the Phonics category. Readers of the Practical Homeschooling Magazine rated all the products with which they were personally familiar on the basis of product quality.

Many people consider SWR to be the best reading program on the market. Others use SWR as just a spelling program. Most teachers appreciate the efficient, unified way SWR integrates many disciplines. Spelling serves as the foundation for phonics, penmanship, literature, composition, grammar, and vocabulary enrichment in a way that leads to spontaneous reading. The program is suitable to all because it uses a logical progression, multi-sensory instruction, and scientific research in a way proven to produce outstanding spellers and readers.

The Core Kit contains the materials the teacher will need to use this program with as many students as she will teach and for the duration of their instruction. We recommend that the teacher also purchase one of each of the Learning Logs so as to build her Master Teacher's Logs (not included in package price).

It illustrates in scripted detail our spelling dictation process, covers instructions and examples for the teaching spelling rule Reference pages, provides ideas for reading assignments, explains ways to improve comprehension skills, and teaches you how to help refine composition skills.

SWR is the revised version of the phenomenal Teaching Reading at Home and School and is part of the Core Kit of Teacher's materials.

The WISE Guide is an acronym for Words, Instructions, Spelling Enrichments. This book has broken down the entire list of 2,000 spelling words into manageable weekly lessons. Mrs. Sanseri has incorporated spelling reinforcement activities that teach weekly spelling words, review previously taught words, reinforce spelling rules, develop composition skills, and teach grammar and vocabulary including prefixes, suffixes, plurals, punctuation, analogies, derivatives, verb conjugations, and more! The WISE Guide is used together with Spell to Write and Read to take the guesswork out of teaching language arts, once and for all!

This book is part of the Core Kit of Teacher's materials.

PhonoCardsNew50.jpeg
These cards link the most basic fixed combinations of letters in English with the sounds they make. The front side of the card simply shows the phonogram as we would see it in a book. The back of each card gives detailed information for presenting the phonogram like a master teacher, including what how she is to present the phonogram and side notes for personal understanding.

The cards purposefully omit any picture clues or extra information for the student's viewing. We want to establish the most direct connection between the symbol and the sound. To avoid confusion in working with the SWR program, we do not recommend that you substitute cards from other systems.

These cards have been updated and now come perforated for easy preparation.

Phonogram CD by Gary & Wanda Sanseri

Listen and repeat the phonograms after Gary Sanseri. Practice "reading" them. Take a sample quiz (answer key included). Designed to work with BHI phonogram cards. Even as a Speech Therapist, I needed to listen to this helpful tool as I began the program to be sure I was learning the sounds of the phonograms correctly!

Flash cards use symbols to represent each rule. While the students have the visual clues on the front of the card, the teacher can learn the exact dialogue from the back of the card. Good for fast-paced review before teaching new words. Teachers need to cut apart and laminate the cards for added durability and to help the cards last through long-term use. Classroom size cards are also available from BHI.

These cards are part of the Core Kit of Teacher's materials.

Students K-2 use the Primary Learning Log which has room for over 1000 spelling words. Below each set of 20 words, the student can rewrite neatly and correctly his best sentence(s) of the week. The lines are larger than in the Black Log and have a dotted half line added. Reference pages are already formatted in the back waiting for students to add example words.

We suggest each teacher have a Primary Learning Log to build the Master Teacher's Log at the Beginning Level starting with Section A in the Wise List.

Each student needs a new spelling book every year.

FormattedBlackLog.jpg
We are delighted to announce a tailored replacement for the standard blank composition notebook. The Learning Log is one of the most important tools in the "Spell to Write and Read" approach. The students build their own "text book" for logging in what they are learning each year. Now we have made building the book for students 3rd grade and up more rewarding and less stressful. To build the reference pages, the teacher no longer has to give instructions for when to fold, title, or number pages.

The new log has space to cover all the concepts once captured in the stock blank notebooks. It also expands important concepts:
1) Spelling Rules: collection of ck, dge, ff, ll, ss words.
2) Grammar: subject/object pronouns, subject/verb agreement (showing where verbs sometimes follow patterns similar to the plural rule).
3) Derivative Work: Greek and Latin numbers, Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, suggixes.
4) Vocabulary: heteronyms.

The new black log includes some new reference pages that were not in the original nor are the instructions for these new pages in SWR. You'll want to download the instructions and answer key for these new pages.

We suggest each teacher have a Black Learning Log to build the Master Teacher's Log at the Advanced Level starting with Section P in the Wise List.

Each student needs a new spelling book every year.
